What Skydiving Taught Me

Published: July 12, 2021

There's a lot to be learned in the world of skydiving! From personal lessons to the value of friendship and some lifelong skills, it will change the way you view the world. Here, we share some of the sport's greatest lessons.

Lessons In Empowerment

One of the greatest lessons you can learn in skydiving is the lesson of empowerment.

When you've jumped from an airplane, you'll feel like there's nothing you can't do. It's an incredible experience that, for most people, is a huge step in overcoming fear, too. Once you've done it, you'll know you can do anything you put your mind to.

There's something very powerful about knowing you can jump and save yourself, too. Every jump is an exercise in self-control, where you feel the fun of freefall until a designated altitude when you pull your parachute. It's the ultimate self-preservation thrill.

The Importance Of Trust

Skydiving is so much fun. But no skydiver worth their salt will ever take for granted the risks involved.

Skydivers are responsible for themselves at the end of the day, but that doesn't stop us looking out for one another. From the choices we make about who to jump with, to the checks we do on one another's equipment before each jump, as a community we put a lot of trust into one another.

Try to think of any other walk of life that requires such a level of trust. It's difficult! Skydiving is unique in that way and it's something you have to experience to understand.

How To Save Your Life

Every day, we do things that require our vigilance to keep us safe. Driving your car, crossing the street, cooking your food... they all require an awareness of what you're doing to get them right.

The same applies for skydiving. After hundreds of jumps, it's second nature to complete equipment checks before jumping and then to operate the equipment to deploy your parachute and, if necessary, deal with anything that follows.

Not only is this empowering, it's a great skill to have. You need to be calm and collected, to remember important information and to make decisions quickly and efficiently. These are skills that can help you throughout your life.

The Value Of Friendship

Nothing is more apparent in skydiving than the strength of the friendships within it. In fact, if you ask us why do people skydive... this is probably ones of the biggest reasons we can give. Even if you're only on the drop zone for a day, you'll see the relationships between skydivers in every aspect of your stay.

When you jump with other people, you put your trust in them and you share an incredible experience together. It's the kind of thing strong bonds are made of and skydiving teaches you just how important those relationships are.
